FAQ About EDpCloud Data Synchronization and File Replication
What is the file size limit
EDpCloud imposes no limits. The limit is imposed by your operating system and file system only.
Is there a limit on files or storage
No. Depends only on the storage on the remote server and your bandwidth.
Can you work on mobile phones
Are there any restrictions on bandwidth
No. But if you want to create a restriction yourself to control the bandwidth, you can.
Can I replicate from a virtual machine
Can I replicate to Google VM
Can I replicate to a VM in Microsoft's cloud
Can I manage replication remotely
Yes you can use a browser or a CLI.
Can I replicate open files under windows
Yes you can.
How do I download EDpCloud?
Register for your free download at www.enduradata.com and click on the Download tab.
Make sure you also download and install the edlicense file under EDpCloud etc directory. Sometimes your firewall may rename the file into something else.
Simply copy the file to edlicense and move it to EDpCloud/etc directory.
Do I need a license for each host ?
Yes. Each host needs a license.
Do you support UNC paths?
UNC paths are supported both as a source and as a destination directory
Can I replicate data from windows to Linux ?
Yes. You can replicate from one platform to another. For example you can replicate Mac, Windows to Linux and vice-versa.
Which platforms have the real time replication?
Windows and Linux
What do I need to backup a Windows server to a remote Linux server ?
1. Configure file replication on windows
2. Configure replication on Linux
3. Create a real time configuration (optional) or see step 4
4. Create a schedule
If using realtime replication, make sure you perform initial synchronization first.
Can I combine real time and scheduled replication ?
Yes. You can cr create a schedule to replicate data. You can combine scheduled replication with real time replication for Windows and Linux.
How do I perform initial synchronization ?
a. You can use the GUI (See Distribution/backup tab).
b. You can use edq command line:
edq -l linkname -r receivername -n directoryname
edq -l linkname -r receivername -n filename
Are deletes propagated ?
Yes. But you have to indicate that in your configuration. See eddist.cfg documentation.
Is this real time sync ?
Windows and Linux have real time sync. AIX, SOLARIS, MAC and other UNIX flavors have schedule file sync.
Can I configure bi-directional replication?
Yes but make sure you specify an includes file.
How do you deal with simultaneous writes on the same file in the case of bi-directional replication
The last writer wins.
Can I use NFS?
EDpCloud can replicate from and to an NFS path.
Do you support encryption ?
Yes by default all the transport is encrypted using AES128. All communications are encrypted by default.
When the data arrives at the destination, it is unencrypted. If you don't trust the remote site, then
you can set enrypt="1" on the source and decrypt="0" on the destination. Unless the destination has your
encryption key, they will not be able to decrypt it even if they set decrypt="1".
How do I decrypt encrypted files ?
How do I disable compression ?
Which non-profits qualify for a free license?
The decision to grant free software licenses is made on a case by case basis.
For example, some educational institutions qualify while others will not. Some non profits that are engaged in changing human conditions qualify
for 100% discounts. Others for partial discount. Our goal is to do good by helping these institutions.
What are the differences between EDpCloud, Glider and EDWADDS ?
EDWADDS and Glider have been retired. Glider was a slim version of EDWADDS. EDpCloud is the new replacement of EDWADDS.
What is the WebDav tab?
The WebDav tab allows system administrator to configure access to remote data using WebDav protocol.
When installing under Linux I get: edpath: No such file or directory
The reason you get that error is because you are either installing 32 bit package on a 64 bit machine
or you are installing a 64 bit package on a 32 bit machine.
See the following example:
Enter install path name [/usr/local/enduradata] :
./install.sh: line 282: ./edpcloud/bin/edpath: No such file or directory
Error: You must use an absolute path: You entered
root@edpcloudremote:/home/eh/enduradata_edpcloud# uname -a
Linux edpcloudremote 3.14-0.bpo.2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.14.15-2~bpo70+1nvme1 (2014-09-19) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Solution: Download the correct package that matches the architecture of your machine. If you are running 64 bit
Linux, download file replication software for your platform and that has 64 in the file name.
Can we use our own scheduler such as cron or windows scheduler ?
Yes you can.
Can we run on a virtual machine?
Yes. EDpCloud file sync runs on both virtual machines and on physical machines..
Can we redistribute any code that comes with EDpCloud ?
No you cannot. But if you insist, contact EnduraData to work some sort of an agreement.
Which non profits qualify for a free license
Depending on the mission and funding of the non profits, they may qualify for a free license and for support.
Please contact EnduraData to find out if your non profit qualifies for a free license.
